Worked example: UAF GPA
Three courses under Quality Point Grading System. Multiply each course's credit hours by its grade point, add the results, and divide by the total credit hours.
| Course | Marks | Grade | Grade point | Credit hours | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 83 | A (80–100%) | 4 | 4 | 16 |
| Course 2 | 60 | C (60%) | 2.666 | 3 | 7.998 |
| Course 3 | 40 | D (40%) | 1 | 3 | 3 |
| Total | 10 | 26.998 |
The GPA for several terms works the same way: weight each term's result by its credit hours. The calculator above does this for you.
How your result is calculated
- UAF uses quality points: each credit hour carries 20 marks, and the Quality Point Table gives the quality points for the marks obtained in each course (for example, a 3-credit-hour course marked out of 60 earns 9 quality points for 39 marks). GPA = total quality points of the semester ÷ total credit hours of the semester; CGPA = total quality points from the first semester to the latest ÷ total credit hours over the same semesters.
- The grade points shown here are the table's quality points per credit hour for each whole percentage (read from the 100-mark column and divided by 5): D runs from 1.0 at 40% to 1.9 at 49%, C from 2.0 at 50% to about 2.93 at 64%, B from 3.0 at 65% to about 3.93 at 79%, and A (80–100%) earns 4.0.
- In 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-credit-hour courses (20, 40, 60 and 80 marks) some marks fall between whole percentages, and the table gives them quality points in between (for example, 31 out of 60 earns 6.33).
- Grade points are worked out from the percentage in each course separately, not from the percentage of total marks.
- To pass a course you need at least 40% marks in theory and in practical separately; below 40% is F with 0 quality points.
- An improved grade replaces an earlier F or D grade in the CGPA, but the F and D grades stay on the transcript.
