How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit hours
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credit hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • A plus adds 0.33 and a minus subtracts 0.33 grade points per hour (A+ 4.33 … D- 0.67); F and IN take no plus or minus.
  • A cumulative GPA of 4.0 is the highest GPA an undergraduate can receive, even with A+ grades.
  • GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA hours, rounded to the third decimal (catalog example: 32.67 ÷ 16 = 2.042). IN, P, W, NA and NC are not used in the GPA.
  • Alabama keeps two GPAs: the institutional GPA uses only University of Alabama work; the overall GPA also includes transfer work accepted for credit. Both include all attempted work, including failed and repeated courses.
  • Repeats: every attempt counts in the GPA, but only the last (most recent) attempt counts toward earned hours (also for equivalent courses transferred in).
  • NC (No Credit) can be reported only in freshman composition and introductory math courses and is not included in the GPA.
  • Pass/fail option: P does not affect the GPA, but an F under the option counts. Open to sophomores and above with a GPA of 2.0 or higher, electives only, at most four courses or 12 hours and one course per term.
  • An IN not resolved by the end of the next regular semester becomes F.
  • Academic Second Opportunity: a student away for at least three academic years may be readmitted with no University of Alabama GPA; earlier UA grades stay on the record but are not used in the GPA (C- or higher count as passing hours). Once only, irrevocable.
