How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Sessional GPA
Sessional GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • A grade point average is the weighted sum of the grade points earned divided by the number of courses in which grade points were earned: a full-credit (1.0) course is weighted 1.0 and a half-credit (0.5) course 0.5. UTM states the same weights as 2 and 1.
  • The Sessional GPA covers one term or session (Fall, Winter or Summer); the Cumulative GPA covers all courses completed to date. Arts & Science and UTM also calculate an Annual GPA for the Fall/Winter session.
  • A course is passed with a final mark of at least 50% (or P/CR). F (0-49%) counts as 0.0 in the GPA.
  • CR/NCR, AEG, transfer credits, Extra courses, LWD, WDR, INC, SDF, IPR, GWR and NGA carry no grade points and are not included in the GPA.
  • Arts & Science and UTSC degree students may choose up to 2.0 credits to be assessed Credit/No Credit; CR needs a final mark of at least 50%.
  • UTSC: in a course that is graded only on a CR/NCR basis, NCR is counted as an F (0.0) in the GPA.
  • Arts & Science: when a failed course is taken again, every attempt stays on the record and counts in the GPA unless an attempt was taken CR/NCR or marked Extra.
  • Arts & Science: a passed course may be repeated once. For second attempts from September 2025, if the second mark is higher the first attempt is marked Extra and left out of the GPA (up to 2.0 credits); otherwise the second attempt is marked Extra.
  • The grade point values apply to individual courses; a grade point average does not necessarily correspond exactly to a letter grade.
