How your result is calculated
- Quality points = AMCAS weight × semester hours; each AMCAS GPA = total quality points ÷ total semester hours.
- AMCAS reports a GPA for each academic status (high school, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, postbaccalaureate, graduate), each split into BCPM, AO (all other) and Total.
- BCPM GPA: only courses classified as biology, chemistry, physics or mathematics (including statistics and biostatistics). Natural and physical sciences courses (e.g. geology, environmental science) go into AO, not BCPM.
- Postbaccalaureate undergraduate courses are included in the cumulative undergraduate GPA; graduate courses are calculated separately.
- Every attempt of a repeated course counts, even if your school replaces the earlier grade; original grades removed by academic forgiveness or bankruptcy must be entered and count.
- Pluses and minuses always count, even if your school ignores them; A+ and A both carry 4.0.
- Failed courses count with 0.0 even if your school leaves them out; IF or unofficial/administrative withdrawals may be treated as F.
- Pass/Fail courses (pass and fail), AP, CLEP and other test credit are reported as supplemental hours, not in the GPA; W, AU, deferred-grade, exempt and no-record courses carry no weight.
- Any course with credit hours and a letter or numeric grade counts, whether or not it counted toward your degree, including college courses taken in high school.
- Quarter hours become semester hours (e.g. 3.0 quarter = 2.0 semester, 4.0 = 2.7, 5.0 = 3.3).
- AMCAS converts each school's grades with conversion data from that school; the AMCAS Grade Conversion Guide gives the tables for other grading systems (half-step, pass/fail, numeric, Canadian).

Questions
How is AMCAS AMCAS GPA calculated?
AMCAS GPA is the average of your grade points weighted by semester hours: multiply each course's semester hours by the grade point for your grade, add these up, and divide by the total semester hours. Under AMCAS grades and weights, A+ carries 4 grade points on a 4-point scale.
How is AMCAS Cumulative Undergraduate GPA calculated?
Cumulative Undergraduate GPA is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by semester hours.
Is OpenCGPA an official AMCAS calculator?
No. OpenCGPA is independent and not affiliated with American Medical College Application Service. It applies the rules published in AMCAS's own documents, linked on this page. Your official result is the one on your grade card.
