How your result is calculated
- Honor points for a course = units × the grade's honor points (a C+ in a 4-unit course = 9.2 honor points). GPA = total honor points ÷ total units attempted; worked example: 45.5 honor points ÷ 15 units = 3.03.
- Boston University has no A+, D+ or D- grades; plus/minus steps are printed to one decimal (A- 3.7, B+ 3.3 … C- 1.7).
- The term average is called the GPI (Grade Point Index); the GPA is the cumulative average across all enrolled terms.
- AU, P, P*, W, MG, CR and NC carry no honor points and are not used in the GPA. I and J grades are not computed until the work is completed and a letter grade is assigned.
- Repeated courses: a course not designated as repeatable may be retaken for a grade only once; the units and grades of every attempt count in the GPA (the new grade does not replace the original), and units toward the degree are given only once. A course taken Pass/Fail may not be repeated.
- Pass/Fail: up to eight units of elected Pass/Fail coursework toward the bachelor's degree, one Pass/Fail course per term; D or above becomes P* (not in the GPA), while F* counts in the GPA with 0 honor points.
- No more than 16 units graded D may count toward the degree; all D grades, including repeated courses, are counted in the GPI and GPA.
- Incomplete (undergraduates): must be resolved within one year or the date on the Incomplete Grade Agreement (whichever comes first); it then converts to the grade on the agreement, or F if none is indicated.
- Grades for courses taken at other institutions are not calculated into the Boston University GPA; only units transfer.
