How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
GPA
GPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit hours
CGPA
CGPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credit hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • Plus grades are worth 0.4 more than the letter (B+ 3.4, C+ 2.4, D+ 1.4) and minus grades 0.3 less (A- 3.7, B- 2.7, C- 1.7, D- 0.7). There is no A+.
  • Graded credits (A through E, and IE) are calculated into the GPA; earned credits (A through D-, CR) count toward graduation.
  • E is the failing grade; IE (incomplete not finished within the contract period, at most one year) is calculated as a failing grade.
  • W, CR, NC, I, T and NS are not calculated into the GPA.
  • Repeats: a BYU course may be taken up to three times (each official withdrawal counts as one). Beginning Winter 2026, only the grade and credit hours of the most recent attempt are used in the GPA; earlier grades stay on the transcript marked RPT. The most recent attempt must carry equal or greater credit hours.
  • Courses repeated Fall 2011 through Fall 2025: all grades count in the GPA. R-suffix courses: all attempts count in the GPA. Repeats taken at another institution are not counted as repeats.
