How your result is calculated
- GPA = grade points ÷ units graded; grade points = course units × grade point value. CR and NC have no effect on the GPA; F and WU count.
- A+ carries 4.0, the same as A.
- WU (withdrawal unauthorized) is equivalent to F for GPA purposes.
- Three GPAs are kept: Term GPA (the term's graded work), Cal Poly GPA (Cal Poly courses only) and Higher Ed GPA (all college work, Cal Poly and transfer).
- Grade forgiveness: undergraduates may repeat up to 16 units of courses graded C- or lower. If the second Cal Poly grade is equal to or higher than the first, it replaces the first in the GPA; if it is lower, both grades are averaged into the GPA. Both grades stay on the transcript.
- From Fall 2026, forgiveness can be applied to the same course twice; further attempts are averaged into the GPA.
- After the 16 forgiveness units, another 12 units may be repeated with both grades averaged; after 28 repeated units no more repeats are allowed. Courses graded C or better cannot be repeated.
- A course first taken for a letter grade and retaken CR/NC keeps the original grade in the GPA. Courses repeated at another institution and transferred back are not eligible for forgiveness.
- Credit/No Credit: CR = C- or better for undergraduates, NC = D+ or lower; at most 12 units may be elected CR/NC.
- W is not used in calculating GPAs; undergraduates may withdraw from no more than 18 semester units.
- An Incomplete not completed within the agreed time (at most one year) counts as F (or NC) in the GPA; an RP not replaced within one year becomes F.
