How your result is calculated
- GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA hours at Clemson for the semester, session or other period.
- Quality points per credit hour: A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1. No quality points for F, I, P, NP or W. The grading system has no plus or minus grades.
- An Incomplete (I) is calculated as an F in the GPA until the work is made up; it converts to F if not removed within 30 days of the start of the next scheduled session.
- P and NP are used only in courses approved as Pass/No Pass only and do not affect the GPA; a letter-graded course cannot be taken Pass/No Pass by choice.
- W (withdrew) carries no quality points and does not affect the GPA.
- Repeats: a course passed with a grade lower than B may be repeated; unless Academic Forgiveness is applied, both grades stay on the record and both count in the cumulative GPA. A grade of C cannot be forgiven.
- If a course passed with B or better is repeated, the credits and grade points of the repeat attempt are removed from the cumulative summary.
- Academic Forgiveness: an enrolled degree-seeking student may remove up to two courses graded D or F from the GPA calculation (Clemson courses only, not Pass/No Pass, not courses before fall 2003 or with an academic integrity violation; irreversible; not after graduation). It also reduces earned credit hours.
- Only grades earned at Clemson are used in the GPA; transfer grades are not.
- Academic renewal: after two or more years away, a readmitted student may start a new grade-point computation without the previous credits and deficit.
