How your result is calculated
- GPA = Σ (credit hours × quality points) ÷ total credits taken, on a 4.3 scale (A+ = 4.3). The cumulative average uses all grades earned at Cornell.
- Passing grades run from A+ to D-; F is failing.
- S (work equal to C- or higher) and U (below C-) carry no grade points and are not used in the GPA; S earns credit, U does not. Each college sets its own S/U limits.
- INC, NG, NGR and R have no quality points.
- An Incomplete not made up in time becomes an F in some colleges and stays INC in others, depending on the student's college.
- Repeats are handled by each college. In the College of Arts and Sciences both grades stay on the transcript and both count in the term and cumulative GPA; credit counts once unless the course grants credit for repeats.
- College of Arts and Sciences: a course withdrawn after the 57th day shows W where the grade would appear; S/U may be chosen in any number of courses, but at least 80 of the 120 degree credits must be letter-graded.
- Transfer grades are not computed into the Cornell GPA and do not appear on the transcript; the minimum grade for transfer is C.
