Rules the calculator follows
  • Grades are awarded on absolute marks out of 100: 91–100 EX, 86–90 AA, 81–85 AB, 76–80 BB, 71–75 BC, 66–70 CC, 61–65 CD, 56–60 DD, 51–55 DE, 40–50 EE and below 40 FF.
  • The fail grade is printed EF in the 2019–20 tables and FF from 2024–25; it carries 0 grade points.
  • A theory course needs at least 40 marks out of 100, with at least 20 of the 60 end-semester examination marks.
  • CGPA is the credit-weighted average of the grade points of all courses taken since entry; SGPA and CGPA are rounded off to two decimal places.
  • A CGPA of at least 5.0 is needed to pass; class on the final CGPA: below 5.50 Pass Class, 5.50 to below 6.00 Second Class, 6.00 to below 7.50 First Class, 7.50 and above Distinction.
  • Grades are relative: the total marks in a subject are converted to a letter grade on the class's relative performance, so there are no fixed mark bands.
  • A subject is passed with 40% or more in the end-semester examination and 40% or more of the total marks.
  • While an FF or I grade stands, SGPA and CGPA are calculated tentatively with 0 grade points for it and recomputed after the subject is cleared.
  • SGPA and CGPA are rounded off to two decimal places.
  • Class on the final CGPA: 8.25 and above First Class with Distinction; 6.50 and above First Class; below 6.50 Second Class.

SGPA is the average of your grade points weighted by credits: multiply each course's credits by the grade point for your grade, add these up, and divide by the total credits. Under Absolute grading (B.Tech., 2019–20 onward), EX carries 10 grade points on a 10-point scale.

CGPA is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by credits.
