How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
GPA year
GPA year = Σ (Credit points × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit points
Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA = Σ (Semester credit points × GPA year) ÷ Σ Semester credit points

GEMSAS's regulation adds conditions to this average; they are listed in the rules below.

Rules the calculator follows
  • The GPA uses the last three 'GPA years' of your key degree, each equal to one year of full-time study (for example 48 credit points where a full-time load is 8 subjects of 6 credit points), filled from your most recent subjects backwards: Final, Final-1 and Final-2 years.
  • Each GPA year's GPA = Σ (credit points × GPA value) ÷ Σ credit points, including failed and repeated subjects.
  • Weighted GPA = (Final-2 year GPA × 1 + Final-1 year GPA × 2 + Final year GPA × 3) ÷ 6; schools that use an unweighted GPA take the average of the three GPA years. Check each school's weighting: for the University of Melbourne Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Dental Surgery it is (× 1 + × 2 + × 2) ÷ 5.
  • Percentage marks are used whenever they are available; grade-only results are converted with the university-specific columns of the Grading System Conversion Table.
  • Failed subjects count with the credit points they would have earned if passed; when a subject is failed and repeated, both results count.
  • Ungraded passes count toward the GPA year's load but add no GPA value; an ungraded subject reported as failed is treated as a fail.
  • Conceded passes are attributed 49% (GPA 3.5); all supplementary passes receive a GPA value of 4.
  • UQ uses all subjects of the most recently completed eligible qualification instead of three separate GPA years.
