How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Semester hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Semester hours
Institutional GPA
Institutional GPA = Σ (Semester hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Semester hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • Institutional GPA = total quality points ÷ all hours attempted at Georgia State; quality points = hours × grade point.
  • All attempts at all academic courses are included in the GPA, unless a grade is excluded under Repeat to Replace.
  • All grade-point averages are rounded to the hundredth (2.676 → 2.68).
  • WF counts the same as F in the GPA.
  • I, IP, W, WM, S, U, V, K and NR carry no grade points and are not used in the GPA.
  • An Incomplete (I) not removed by the deadline converts to F.
  • Credits from other institutions, credit by examination, S/U credits, CLEP, IB, AP and remedial courses are not used in the institutional GPA; the separate Overall GPA also includes transfer grades. The HOPE scholarship GPA ignores plus and minus.
  • Repeat to Replace: after retaking the same course at Georgia State and earning a higher grade, a student may request that the first grade be excluded from the institutional GPA; all grades stay on the transcript. Maximum four courses; only the first recorded grade can be replaced; not for grades from academic-honesty violations; first associate or bachelor's degree only; cannot be reversed.
  • Bachelor's students may withdraw with W at most six times; withdrawals beyond the limit receive WF (counted as F).
  • At most 12 semester hours of D grades may apply toward degree requirements.
