How your result is calculated
- Georgia Tech uses plain letter grades with no plus or minus: A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and F 0 quality points per credit hour.
- The GPA (the "academic average") is total quality points ÷ total credit hours attempted; for undergraduates it covers every course taken as an undergraduate.
- Grade-point averages are truncated after two decimal places.
- Repeats: a later grade does not replace an earlier one; all attempts count in the GPA (credit is counted once) unless a grade substitution is approved. Failing a repeat of a course already credited forfeits the original credit.
- Grade substitution: up to two Georgia Tech courses with a posted D or F may be repeated at Georgia Tech for substitution, and the original attempt is excluded from the cumulative GPA. Once per course, before the final term, not for courses with an academic-misconduct finding, and it cannot be undone; substitutions under the pre-2019 policy count toward the two.
- Pass/fail grades S and U are not included in the GPA. At most nine pass/fail credit hours count toward an undergraduate degree, only in the Free Electives area.
- An Incomplete (I) not removed by the end of the student's next term in residence (or one calendar year if not enrolled) becomes F.
- Georgia Tech transfers credits, not grades: grades from other institutions are not in the Georgia Tech GPA.
