How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Current GPA
Current GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = quality points ÷ credits graded A+ through F (GPA hours); quality points = grade value × course credits. A+ and A both carry 4.00.
  • There is no D+ or D- for undergraduates.
  • The current GPA covers one term; the cumulative GPA covers all institutional credit. Transfer courses are not included in the George Mason cumulative GPA, and grades earned elsewhere with permission do not count in any George Mason GPA.
  • Repeats: undergraduates have up to three graded attempts per course. The grade in the repeated course replaces the earlier grade in the GPA, even if the newer grade is lower; credit is earned once. A W does not count as a graded attempt.
  • Taking an equivalent course at another university does not remove a Mason grade from the GPA.
  • Courses repeatable for credit: all grades count up to the maximum allowable credits; beyond that, the grade and credits of the earliest attempt are dropped from the cumulative GPA.
  • S/NC: S means C or better for undergraduates; S and NC have no effect on the GPA. Undergraduates may elect up to 6 credits of S/NC, only for electives outside the major, concentration, minor, general education and certificate requirements.
  • W (withdrawal) does not affect the GPA but counts as attempted credit hours.
  • IN has no effect on the GPA; if the work is not completed by the deadline, IN changes to the Incomplete Final Grade recorded when the IN was given. IP, SP and NA have no effect on the GPA.
  • Academic clemency: undergraduates returning after at least three calendar years away may petition to remove up to 16 earlier Mason credits from the cumulative GPA (those courses then do not count toward graduation).
