How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester Average
Semester Average = Σ (Credits × Mark) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative Average
Cumulative Average = Σ (Credits × Mark) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Grades are percentages, each falling in a letter-grade band; semester and cumulative averages are calculated from the percentage grades.
  • Weighted course total = the sum of each course's credit weight multiplied by the grade received. Semester Average = weighted course total ÷ total credit attempts in the semester; Cumulative Average = weighted course total ÷ total credit attempts over all semesters.
  • A grade of 0-49 (F) is a fail; a final mark of at least 50% is needed for credit under the Credit/No Credit option.
  • Repeated failed course: every attempt stays on the transcript and counts in the semester average. From Summer 2026 on, only the highest grade is used in the cumulative average; this does not apply to courses taken before the Summer 2026 semester.
  • Credit/No Credit option: up to 2.00 credits per degree or diploma, on free or liberal education electives only; CR and NCR courses are left out of the semester, cumulative and specialization averages. An NCR still uses up the credits.
  • A supplemental assessment does not replace a failing grade: the original grade stays on the record with a P or F notation.
  • Two-semester courses count as two course attempts with the same grade for each attempt.
  • Exchange courses and some approved courses use the Outstanding/Pass/Fail (OP/P/F) system instead of percentages.
