How your result is calculated
- Quality points are earned per semester credit hour (a B in a three-credit-hour course earns 9 quality points).
- GPA for any period = quality points earned ÷ credit hours attempted in that period; cumulative GPA = total quality points earned at JMU ÷ total credit hours attempted at JMU.
- An F earns no credit but its credit hours count as attempted in the GPA.
- I, CR, NC, W, WP and WF grades, audited courses and grades received at other institutions do not affect quality points, credit hours attempted or GPA.
- Credit/no-credit option: A through C become CR (credit, no quality points) and C- or below becomes NC; neither affects the GPA. At most 15 credit hours may be taken credit/no-credit.
- Repeated courses: all grades are included in the GPA unless the repeat/forgiveness option is used.
- Repeat/forgiveness: for up to two courses, the earlier grade and credit hours are excluded from the cumulative GPA, whether the earlier grade was higher or lower; it must be declared by the end of the course adjustment period and is not available for grades from an Honor Code violation or for courses taken at other institutions.
- An Incomplete not completed by the end of the next regular semester is recorded as F.
- Transfer credit is awarded only for approved courses with a C (2.0) or better, and transfer grades do not affect the JMU GPA.
- The catalog's academic-standing example shows the cumulative GPA to three decimals (119.5 quality points ÷ 60 hours attempted = 1.991).
