How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester GPA
Semester GPA = Σ (Semester hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Semester hours
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Semester hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Semester hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = quality points earned ÷ semester hours attempted. A+ is worth 4.3 quality points per hour.
  • P, W, I and NC carry no quality points and are not used in the GPA.
  • Under the pass-fail option, P (C-quality work or better) is not counted in the GPA, but an F counts like any other F.
  • When a course is repeated, only the last grade counts in the GPA, even if it is lower than the earlier grade. All attempts stay on the transcript.
  • A course passed with C- or better may not be repeated unless the catalog allows it or the dean approves; after a D+ or lower a course may be repeated once, and a third attempt needs the dean's approval.
  • LSU reports two overall averages: the LSU GPA (work attempted at LSU) and the cumulative GPA (work attempted at all colleges and universities attended, so transfer work counts).
  • GPAs are stated to three decimal places, rounding up when the fourth decimal is 5 or more (3.95550 → 3.956; 3.95549 → 3.955).
  • An I becomes an F unless it is removed during the next regular semester in residence, before the deadline for adding courses.
  • Students who have not taken any credit-bearing coursework for at least five consecutive years may declare academic renewal on readmission; all earlier work is then left out of the GPA.
