How your result is calculated
University of Madras's documents list the grade points but do not print the averaging formula; the calculator uses the standard credit-weighted average.
University of Madras's regulation adds conditions to this average; they are listed in the rules below.
- Grade points are not fixed per letter: each grade covers a range that follows the course mark (90–100 marks = 9.0–10.0 points, O; 80–89 = 8.0–8.9, D+; 75–79 = 7.5–7.9, D; 70–74 = 7.0–7.4, A+; 60–69 = 6.0–6.9, A; 50–59 = 5.0–5.9, B; 40–49 = 4.0–4.9, C). U (0–39) and AAA (absent) carry 0.0.
- GPA for a semester = Σ(credits × grade point of each course) ÷ Σ credits; CGPA = the same over all courses of the programme. Credits are those earned for each course.
- A pass needs 40% of the maximum marks in the external (university) examination and 40% in the aggregate of internal and external marks; there is no passing minimum for the internal assessment.
- First and second class are decided on the aggregate marks of Part I, II and III courses: 60% and above is first class, 50% to below 60% second class, other successful students third class.
- Autonomous colleges may modify these regulations with the University's approval.
