How your result is calculated
- GPA = (course credits × grade points, summed) ÷ total GPA course credits. Only courses whose final grade has grade points count as GPA course credits (a P grade has none).
- The GPA is truncated to two decimals, not rounded: 3.596 shows as 3.59.
- The TGPA uses all applicable courses at the same level in one term. The CGPA uses your whole McGill record at the same level and starts again if you change level (e.g. undergraduate to graduate).
- Repeated courses: all final grades are included in the GPA, so a D or F still counts in the CGPA after you repeat the course or take a supplemental exam. Credits for a repeated course are granted only once.
- J (unexcused absence) and KF (failed to meet an extended deadline) count as failures (0) in the TGPA and CGPA.
- P, S, U, W, WF, WL and KK are not calculated in the TGPA or CGPA. An F in a Pass/Fail course is included in the GPA.
- Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option: one elective course per term, up to 10% of the credits taken at McGill toward the degree. S/U courses are excluded from the GPA but count as attempted credits.
- Grades A to C are satisfactory passes, D is a conditional (non-continuation) pass. Courses for program requirements and prerequisites need C or better.
- A minimum CGPA of 2.00 is required to graduate.

Questions
How is McGill Term grade point average (TGPA) calculated?
Term grade point average (TGPA) is the average of your grade points weighted by credits: multiply each course's credits by the grade point for your grade, add these up, and divide by the total credits. Under Undergraduate letter grades (4.0 scale), A carries 4 grade points on a 4-point scale.
How is McGill Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) calculated?
Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by credits.
Is OpenCGPA an official McGill calculator?
No. OpenCGPA is independent and not affiliated with McGill University. It applies the rules published in McGill's own documents, linked on this page. Your official result is the one on your grade card.
