How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units
Rules the calculator follows
  • Weighted average = (grade points × course units, summed) ÷ total course units. Calendar example: 153 ÷ 24 = 6.4.
  • The Term GPA uses the graded units of one term; the Cumulative GPA uses the graded units of the whole undergraduate career. Failed courses (F, 0) are included.
  • Unless the course outline says otherwise, percentage results are converted to letter grades with the equivalent percentage scale.
  • Courses with non-numeric grades (P, COM, NC, AUD), transfer credits and courses designated Extra are not included in the Cumulative GPA; Extra courses do count in the Fall-Winter and Spring-Summer averages. Pass/Fail courses are not included in averages.
  • Since September 1, 2018 a course may be attempted up to three times and the Cumulative GPA includes only the most recent attempt; before that date all attempts count.
  • McMaster's official GPA is calculated on the 12-point scale. The Registrar's grades page lists a 4.0-scale value for each letter grade (A+ 4, A 3.9, A- 3.7 ... D- 0.7, F 0) but does not publish how to average on the 4.0 scale.
  • Note that A is 3.9 on McMaster's 4.0 column, not 4.0.
