Semester grade-point average
Semester grade-point average = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit hours
Cumulative grade-point average (CGPA)
Cumulative grade-point average (CGPA) = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credit hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = total quality points earned ÷ total credit hours attempted.
  • There is no D- grade; A+ earns the same 4.00 as A.
  • F, XF, IF and IE count as credit hours attempted with 0 quality points (IF is equivalent to F).
  • I, IP, W, NC and NG carry no credit hours attempted, credit hours earned or quality points; CR counts as credit earned but not as hours attempted and carries no quality points.
  • An undergraduate Incomplete (I) becomes IF, counted as a failing grade, if the grade change is not submitted by the agreed due date (at most one year).
  • Credit/No Credit: sophomores or above with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 may take one free-elective course per semester (max 9 credit hours) credit-only; A through C- become CR and D or F become NC, and neither counts in the GPA.
  • General Repeat Rule: a course may normally be repeated once; if the first grade was D+ or lower (or C- where a C is required), both the first and the repeat grade count in the CGPA. Repeating a course already passed with C or higher earns no quality points or hours.
  • Undergraduate Repeat Rule: a student may elect to repeat up to two UM courses graded D, D+ or F, at UM, within the next two regular semesters; only the second grade (higher, lower or the same) counts in the CGPA and the first attempt no longer counts as hours attempted. Not available for XF (academic integrity) failures.
  • Only work completed at the University of Miami counts in the official GPA; transfer courses bring credit but no grade or quality points (transfer grades are used only for Latin Honors). Military, examination and similar credit carries no quality points.
