Rules the calculator follows
  • Michigan State grades with numbers instead of letters: 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0 and 0.0. Undergraduates earn credit with 1.0 or higher, but every numerical grade, including 0.0, counts in the GPA.
  • Grade points = numerical grade × credits. Semester GPA = the semester's grade points ÷ its grade-point credits; cumulative GPA = grade points for all semesters ÷ grade-point credits for all semesters. Only Michigan State courses with a numerical grade are counted.
  • The GPA is truncated (not rounded) to three decimal places.
  • Repeats: undergraduates may repeat a course whatever the earlier grade, at most twice (three enrollments in all) and up to 20 repeated credits. The last grade and credits completely replace the earlier grade in the cumulative GPA; all entries stay on the academic record.
  • A course taken for CR or P cannot be repeated on a credit basis, and a repeated course must be taken on the same grading system as the first time.
  • Credit–No Credit (CR-NC): CR means work at the 2.0 level or above, NC below 2.0. CR-NC grades are not included in the semester or cumulative GPA. Undergraduates may take at most 20 credits CR-NC, chosen by the middle of the class; not allowed for the Tier I and Tier II writing, university mathematics and Integrative Studies requirements or courses the major excludes.
  • Pass–No Grade (P/N) is used only in courses approved for it; P and N carry no numerical grade.
  • Incomplete (I): the work must be completed by the middle of the student's next semester in attendance (within one calendar year), otherwise the grade becomes 0.0 (NC or N under those systems). A student who does not enroll again within one calendar year receives U (Unfinished).
  • Withdrawing after the middle of the class leaves a W (no grade) on the transcript; earlier drops do not appear.
  • Courses taken at other institutions are not included in the term or cumulative GPA.

How is MSU Semester grade-point average calculated?

Semester grade-point average is the average of your grade points weighted by credits: multiply each course's credits by the grade point for your grade, add these up, and divide by the total credits. Under Numerical grading system (undergraduate), 4.0 carries 4 grade points on a 4-point scale.

How is MSU Cumulative grade-point average calculated?

Cumulative grade-point average is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by credits.
