How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Term and cumulative GPA = grade points earned ÷ credits attempted with grades of A–F (including pluses and minuses). Both appear on the transcript.
  • There is no A+ (except in the Law School) and no D-. Instructors are not required to use pluses and minuses.
  • An F earns no grade points and no credit, but its credits count in the GPA.
  • S (C- or better) and N carry no grade points and are not part of the GPA; N credits do not count toward any degree. On the Twin Cities campus at most 20 S/N credits may count in the degree (no more than 8 for a student who completes only the minimum 30 University credits), and S/N is not allowed in major coursework unless the unit presets it.
  • Registration symbols (I, W, V, X, K, NR) do not count in the GPA, and zero-credit courses do not count in the term or cumulative GPA.
  • Repeats: an undergraduate may repeat a course only once unless the college offering it grants an exception. Both grades appear on the transcript, the credits count once, and only the last enrollment counts in the GPA (earlier attempts are “bracketed”). This does not apply to courses designated “repetition allowed” or to same-number courses with different content each term.
  • A University course cannot be bracketed with a course taken at another institution, and an F cannot be bracketed with an N. Repeating a course after the degree is awarded does not change the degree GPA.
  • An undergraduate Incomplete not changed to a grade by the day grades are due for the next regular (fall or spring) term automatically becomes F (or N on the S-N scale).
  • Withdrawing in the first two weeks leaves no record; withdrawing in weeks three through ten records a W. Once during undergraduate enrollment a student may withdraw late (up to the last day of instruction) without documentation.
  • Grades in transfer courses are not included in the University of Minnesota cumulative GPA; only University of Minnesota credits are used. Transfer courses below D are not accepted.
  • Graduation requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.000 in University of Minnesota coursework.
