How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester GPA (SGPA)
Semester GPA (SGPA) = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Current GPA (CGPA)
Current GPA (CGPA) = Σ (Semester credits × Semester GPA (SGPA)) ÷ Σ Semester credits

Moratuwa's regulation adds conditions to this average; they are listed in the rules below.

Rules the calculator follows
  • The mark ranges are benchmarks for examiners; the examiner and moderator may amend them under Faculty guidelines.
  • Grades A+ to D need at least 35% in both the written examination and the continuous assessment. Below 35% in both gives F; below 35% in only one gives I-we (written examination) or I-ca (continuous assessment). F, I-we and I-ca carry 0.0 grade points.
  • A grade of D or above is needed to earn credit for a module.
  • SGPA = Σ (credits × grade point) ÷ Σ credits over the modules registered for credit in the semester, rounded to two decimal places. Modules with N (academic concession) or W (withdrawn) are left out.
  • The Current GPA (CGPA) covers all modules registered for credit up to that point, and each semester is given uniform weight. The Overall GPA (OGPA), used for classes, is the final standing based on the CGPA of all registered modules.
  • Non-GPA modules (including industrial training) do not count towards the SGPA, CGPA, OGPA or the award of classes.
  • At a repeat attempt the highest grade normally obtainable is C (exceptions: an academic concession, or Senate approval for a particular module).
  • Classes by Overall GPA (within five academic years): First Class 3.70 or above; Second Class Upper Division 3.30–3.69; Second Class Lower Division 3.00–3.29; Pass 2.00–2.99. The degree needs an Overall GPA of at least 2.00.
  • At a repeat attempt the highest grade normally obtainable is C, except in the cases set out by the Faculty (clause 4.2.10).
