How your result is calculated
- GPA = total grade points ÷ credit hours attempted with regular grades in the semester or summer session; it is calculated to three decimal places.
- A+ carries 4.333 grade points, but A+ grades can raise the semester or cumulative GPA only up to 4.000.
- A C- satisfies 'grade of C or better' prerequisites.
- Repeats: an undergraduate may repeat a course once without permission if the earlier attempt was D+ or lower; grades for all attempts count in the cumulative GPA (no automatic replacement). Credit hours count once toward graduation.
- Grade exclusion: undergraduates may choose up to two NC State courses with letter grades of C- or below to be excluded from the cumulative GPA (grade points and hours removed; the grade stays on the record with a notation). Exclusions must be posted before applying to graduate, cannot be undone, and the excluded course cannot satisfy degree requirements.
- Credit-only: S (C- or better) and U (below C-) do not count in the GPA; at most 12 credit-only hours count toward graduation.
- An IN not made up by the end of the next regular semester enrolled (or 12 months, whichever is shorter, unless extended) becomes F and counts as a course attempted. Re-registering for the course does not remove an IN.
