How your result is calculated
- GPA = Σ(unit value × grade) ÷ Σ unit value, calculated over all units undertaken in the program (the cumulative GPA), including fail grades.
- The GPA is calculated to one decimal place: x.49 and below rounds down and x.50 and above rounds up (430 ÷ 90 = 4.78, reported as 4.8).
- Ungraded passes (UP) are left out, except that they count as 4 when that raises a GPA below 4.0, or when more than half of the grades are ungraded passes.
- Only units completed at the University of Newcastle count; credit from another institution is left out. If more than the program's units were completed, only the approved units (and all fail grades) count.
- If a course was passed twice through an administrative error, the first completion counts. Part A of a multi-term sequence course (NA) is left out; Part B carries the mark.
- Incomplete (I) or Special Consideration (S) grades leave the GPA uncalculated until final marks are awarded.
- WAM = Σ(mark × unit value × level weighting) ÷ Σ(unit value × level weighting).
- The level weighting comes from the first digit of the course code, whatever year the course is taken in: 1000-level courses × 1, 2000-level × 2, 3000-level × 3, 4000-, 5000- and 6000-level × 4.
- The Bachelor Honours WAM uses only courses above the 1000 level (2000 × 2, 3000 × 3, 4000–6000 × 4).
- Marks of 50–100 and fail marks of 45–49 count as the actual mark; a fail mark below 45 counts as 44.
- Ungraded passes (UP) are left out, except that they count as 58 when that raises a WAM below 58, or when more than half of the grades are ungraded passes.
- Only units completed at the University of Newcastle count; credit from another institution is left out. If a course was passed twice through an administrative error, the first completion counts.
- For honours, the WAM (to two decimal places) is rounded to a whole number: xx.49 and below rounds down, xx.50 and above rounds up (76.49 → 76; 76.51 → 77).
- An annual WAM covers the courses taken in one calendar year; the cumulative WAM covers all units in the program.

Questions
How is UON SGPA calculated?
SGPA is the average of your grade points weighted by units: multiply each course's units by the grade point for your grade, add these up, and divide by the total units. Under UON Grade Point Average (7-point), HD carries 7 grade points on a 7-point scale.
How is UON CGPA calculated?
CGPA is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by units.
Is OpenCGPA an official UON calculator?
No. OpenCGPA is independent and not affiliated with The University of Newcastle. It applies the rules published in UON's own documents, linked on this page. Your official result is the one on your grade card.
