How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester GPA
Semester GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Grade points for a course = credits × the grade-point equivalent of the grade (A 4.000 … F 0.000).
  • Semester and cumulative GPA = total grade points ÷ credits of the courses completed with a quality grade (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D or F).
  • GPAs are calculated to three decimal places and printed on transcripts rounded to two decimal places.
  • Courses taken satisfactory/unsatisfactory (SA/UN), pass/fail, credit/no credit or for audit are not used in computing grade points.
  • Under SA/UN, A to C is recorded as SA and D or F as UN; baccalaureate students may take up to 12 SA/UN credits (associate degree: 6), no more than two courses per semester, and General Education courses are not allowed.
  • A course may be repeated only when a grade below C was earned, for a maximum of two attempts (a late drop counts as an attempt); all grades stay on the transcript, and for up to 12 repeated credits the most recent grade is used in the cumulative GPA.
  • A student who stops attending without officially dropping receives an F.
  • A deferred grade (DF) not changed within ten weeks of the grade-reporting deadline becomes an F and counts in the semester and cumulative GPA; a no grade (NG) not reconciled within five weeks also becomes an F.
  • An XF (academic integrity failure) carries the same grade points as an F.
  • Grades earned at other colleges and universities are not used in the Penn State GPA: credits transfer, but grades and grade points do not.
