How your result is calculated
Peradeniya's regulation adds conditions to this average; they are listed in the rules below.
- The mark range for each grade is decided by the Faculty; the handbook gives no fixed mark bands.
- Each level's GPA (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 level) = Σ (credits × grade point) ÷ Σ credits over the course units taken at that level, to two decimal places.
- Final GPA = weighted sum of the level GPAs. B.Sc. degree: 1000 level 20%, 2000 level 40%, 3000 level 40%. Honours degrees: 1000 level 20%, 2000 level 20%, 3000 level 30%, 4000 level 30%.
- ENG1002 (English) and the Non-GPA courses are not counted in the GPA.
- At least a D grade is needed to earn credits for a course unit.
- A course unit with C-, D+, D or E may be repeated by sitting the final examination; the maximum grade given at a repeat is C.
- B.Sc. classes: First Class GPA 3.70 and over; Second Class (Upper Division) 3.30–3.69; Second Class (Lower Division) 3.00–3.29 — each also needs at least grade C in a minimum number of credits and completion within three years. The B.Sc. degree needs a GPA of at least 2.00.
