How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
GPA
GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
CGPA
CGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Plus and minus grades are a quarter point from the letter (A- 3.75, B+ 3.25 … D- 0.75); A+ carries 4.00, the same as A.
  • The cumulative GPA is based on all University of Pittsburgh credits completed at the career level; transfer and test credit are recorded as T.
  • H/S/U option: H (A- or higher) and S (C to B+) count toward graduation but not the GPA; U (C- or lower) counts toward neither.
  • S/NC option: S (C or better) counts toward graduation but not the GPA; NC counts toward neither.
  • Repeats: the grade earned by repeating a course is used in the GPA instead of the earlier grade (even if lower); the earlier course and grade stay on the record but are not calculated. If the repeat ends in a grade that does not calculate (W, R, N, NC…), or while an Incomplete is unresolved, the earlier grade keeps counting.
  • A course may be repeated no more than two times (three attempts); grades other than R or N count as attempts. A repeat taken at another institution does not replace a Pitt grade, and no extra credit is earned.
  • The G grade (unfinished classwork) cannot be assigned for classes after the Summer 2026 term.
