How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester GPA
Semester GPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit hours
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credit hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • Semester GPA = sum of index points (grade weight × semester hours) for A+ through D-, E, IF and F ÷ sum of the corresponding semester hours; P, N, I, PI, SI, W, WF, WN, WU, IN, IU, AU and NS are not included.
  • A non-repeatable course may be taken up to three times; for a repeated course (same course and same grade mode) only the most recent grade is included in the cumulative GPA.
  • Transfer credits from other colleges can fulfil degree requirements but cannot be used to remove Purdue grades from GPA calculations.
  • A grade of E can be improved to no higher than D by completing special requirements by the end of another semester; the D then replaces the E in future GPAs.
  • An incomplete (I) not resolved within one year becomes IF, which counts as a failing grade; PI and SI become IN and IU, which do not affect the GPA.
  • Pass/not-pass: grades A+ through C- are reported as passed; the course is not used in computing the GPA. The option may not exceed 20 percent of the credit hours required for graduation.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 is required for graduation.
