How your result is calculated
- Cumulative GPA = Σ (numerical equivalent of the grade × credits) ÷ total credits of the courses included in the average.
- There are no minus grades and no A+; the plus grades B+ and C+ are worth 3.5 and 2.5.
- School of Arts and Sciences: when a course with a D or F is repeated, both grades normally stay in the cumulative GPA, but for up to 16 credits in no more than four courses the D or F is removed (E prefix) and the repeat grade counts (R prefix). This applies once per course, the repeat must be taken at Rutgers–New Brunswick, and it does not apply to punitive F grades.
- If the student earns an F or D a second time under that policy, only the second grade enters the cumulative GPA.
- A course already passed with C or better may only be repeated for E credit, which earns no credit and is not computed in the GPA.
- Pass/No Credit grades are nonnumerical: Pass corresponds to A, B+, B, C+ or C and No Credit to D or F.
- NG and TZ have no immediate effect on the GPA but convert to F if not resolved within the following semester.
- Courses completed at other units of Rutgers University are included in the cumulative GPA; J-prefixed courses (taken while in high school) earn credit but are not counted in the GPA.
