How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester GPA
Semester GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units
SJSU cumulative GPA
SJSU cumulative GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units
Rules the calculator follows
  • A+ carries 4.0 grade points, the same as A (California regulations cap A+ at 4.0).
  • WU (withdrawal unauthorized) is equivalent to an F for the GPA and academic standing; IC (incomplete charged) carries 0.0 grade points and counts in the GPA.
  • AU, I, CR, RD, RP, NC and W are not calculated into the GPA.
  • An Incomplete (I) not completed by the agreed deadline (at most one calendar year, extendable to two years) converts to the grade named on the Incomplete agreement, or to IC or NC.
  • Credit/No Credit (undergraduate): Credit = A through C-; No Credit = D+ through F, IC or WU. CR/NC grades are not in the GPA.
  • Repeats: only a course graded below C (including WU, IC and NC) may be repeated, up to 28 repeated units. Grade Forgiveness: the most recent grade replaces the earlier grade in the GPA (even if it is lower); it is applied automatically for up to 16 units, only to courses taken and repeated at SJSU, and not to grades from academic dishonesty. Students may opt out by petition.
  • After the 16 units of Grade Forgiveness are used, Grade Averaging applies: grade points and units from all attempts count in the SJSU cumulative GPA and the overall GPA.
  • Graduation needs a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a GPA of 2.0 in all SJSU coursework (also 2.0 in the major and minor).
  • Quarter-system transfer work is converted to semester units (one semester unit = one and one-half quarter units).
