How your result is calculated
- GPA = total grade points ÷ total semester hours attempted for credit; hours taken Pass-Fail or audit are left out.
- The letter grades are A (4), B+ (3.5), B (3), C+ (2.5), C (2), D+ (1.5), D (1) and F (0); A, B, C and D are passing grades.
- WF (withdrawal after the penalty deadline) and FN (failure–non attendance) count as F in the GPA.
- S, U, UN, W, I, AUD, T and NR carry no grade points and are not used in the GPA.
- Pass-Fail: free electives only, at most eight courses, and not available when the semester or cumulative GPA is below 2.00; S and U do not affect the GPA.
- An Incomplete (I) not made up within 12 months becomes F or the back-up grade set by the instructor.
- Repeats: both grades count in the GPA unless course grade forgiveness is applied.
- Course grade forgiveness: after a D+, D, F or WF, a second attempt at the same course with a regular letter grade replaces the first grade in the University of South Carolina cumulative GPA; both grades stay on the record. Maximum two courses (8 credits), once per course, taken at the Columbia or Palmetto College campuses; not after the first USC bachelor's degree; past honors and academic standing are not recalculated.
- Since Summer 2017, transfer grade points and GPAs no longer appear on the USC record (students admitted or readmitted from then on).
- Academic forgiveness (after at least 48 months away and 24 graded hours after readmission) recalculates the GPA using a 2.00 for all grade hours taken before readmission.
