How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Units of course weight × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units of course weight
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Units of course weight × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units of course weight
Rules the calculator follows
  • The calendar sets no university-wide percentage ranges: grades reflect a combination of absolute achievement and relative performance in a class, and must match the descriptor.
  • GPA = total grade points earned ÷ total units of course weight attempted; grade points = grade point value × units of course weight. A normal course carries 3.0 units.
  • The GPA for any period is based on the final grades, including failing grades, in all courses taken during that period.
  • W (withdrew), CR and NC are not included in any GPA. IN5 counts as 0.00. A reexamination or deferred examination mark replaces the original final examination mark.
  • When a deferred, incomplete or missing grade is outstanding, the GPA is not computed until the final grade is reported.
  • Any GPA is rounded to the nearest decimal place using standard rounding rules (up when the first non-significant digit is 5 or more).
  • A passed course may not normally be repeated, and a failed course may be re-registered only once, unless the Dean (or designate) allows it.
  • Faculties use different averages for standing (Fall/Winter, Term, Promotion and Graduation GPAs); the Faculty of Arts uses a cumulative Faculty GPA (FGPA).
