How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units
Rules the calculator follows
  • Grade points per unit: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0; a plus adds 0.3 and a minus subtracts 0.3, except that A+ carries 4.0, the same as A.
  • The GPA is computed on courses undertaken in the University of California (and, since fall 2005, UC Berkeley Extension XB courses taken after matriculation). P, NP, I and IP carry no grade points and are excluded.
  • Only courses with D+, D, D-, F, NP or U may be repeated. For repeated D+/D/D-/F courses only the most recent grade counts for the first 12 units repeated; beyond 12 units the GPA uses all grades.
  • Repeating a course more than once needs the dean's approval; without it the repeated course is not included in the GPA.
  • Courses taken for a letter grade can only be repeated for a letter grade.
  • Passed (P) grades may account for no more than one third of the 120 units needed for the degree.
  • An undergraduate I grade not replaced by the deadline becomes F (or NP) and is then counted in the GPA.
