How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Quarterly GPA
Quarterly GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units
UC GPA
UC GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units
Rules the calculator follows
  • A+ earns 4.000 grade points per unit, the same as A; minus grades are 0.3 below and plus grades 0.3 above the unsuffixed grade.
  • UC GPA = total grade points ÷ total attempted UC units (letter-graded courses only), e.g. 116.40 ÷ 59.00 = 1.973.
  • The GPA is computed on courses taken at any University of California campus and UC Davis Extension (concurrent courses).
  • Courses graded P, NP, S, U, IP, NG, Y or I, excluded repeat units and courses without degree credit are left out of the GPA.
  • Passed (P) is given for work that would otherwise earn C- or higher; P units count toward the degree but not the GPA. At most one-third of the units taken in residence may be P/NP.
  • Incomplete grades are not included in the GPA at the end of a term; any I grades remaining at graduation are calculated as not passing (F, NP or U). An I may be replaced by the end of the third succeeding term of academic residence.
  • Repeats: undergraduates may repeat courses graded D+ or below (C- or below for an Entry Level Writing course), NP, or a permanent I. For the first 16 units repeated, only the grade earned the second time counts; after 16 units, all grades and units attempted count. A letter-graded course may not be repeated P/NP.
