How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Yearly grade point average
Yearly grade point average = Σ (Units × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units
Cumulative grade point average
Cumulative grade point average = Σ (Units × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = sum of (grade point × course units) ÷ total units. A 6-unit course counts twice as much as a 3-unit course.
  • GPAs are cut off at the second decimal place, not rounded: a GPA calculated at 2.999 is 2.99.
  • All grades, including F (0.00), are used in the yearly GPA; cumulative GPAs are determined by the faculties, so check your faculty's regulations for promotion, graduation and how repeated courses count.
  • The university does not set percentage ranges for letter grades: when a course is marked in another system (such as percentages), the course outline gives the conversion chart.
  • CG (Credit Granted) is not included in the GPA. Undergraduates may take up to 9 units with CG over a degree, must be in good academic standing and need a final grade of C- or higher.
  • CR (Completed Requirements) carries no weight in the GPA. In some faculties a course marked "Not Included in GPA" is graded CR or F and is left out of the GPA; the Faculty of Law uses a D grade that is not included in the GPA.
  • W (Withdraw) and EW (Extenuating Circumstance Withdraw) carry no academic penalty and do not affect the GPA.
  • A course may be repeated only once (withdrawals do not count as attempts); a further repeat needs the permission of your faculty and the department. Every attempt and its grade stays on the transcript.
  • D (1.00) is a minimal pass; a grade of C- or below may not be enough for promotion or graduation, and faculties limit the number of D and D+ grades accepted for credit.
