How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Grade points for a course = course credits × points per credit (e.g. B- in a 3-credit course = 2.7 × 3 = 8.1). GPA = total grade points of courses graded A–F ÷ total credits.
  • The term GPA includes all courses graded A–F in a semester or summer session; the cumulative GPA averages all courses graded A–F.
  • Pass/Fail: up to 12 credits, at most one course per semester and three courses in total, electives only; the instructor's letter grade becomes P (D- or above) or F, and neither is included in the semester or cumulative GPA.
  • S/U courses (set by the faculty) carry no grade points.
  • Temporary grades (I, X, N) carry no credit and do not prevent the GPA from being calculated; unfinished work is due by the end of the third week of the following semester, after which the instructor grades the work completed (a failing result shows the temporary grade followed by F).
  • A course dropped after the second week appears with W (no grade points).
  • Repeats: a course may be repeated once without permission (a third time with dean and instructor permission, never more than three times). Only the most recent attempt counts in the GPA, even if its grade is lower; earlier grades stay on the transcript. Credit is allowed once. A course repeated after the degree does not change the GPA.
  • Transfer credit needs a grade of C (2.0) or above; grades and grade points do not transfer.
