How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Quarter GPA
Quarter GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) ÷ Σ Units
Cumulative UC GPA
Cumulative UC GPA = Σ (Units × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Units
Rules the calculator follows
  • A+ earns the same 4.0 grade points as A.
  • GPA = total grade points (grade value × units) ÷ total units taken.
  • The GPA covers all courses undertaken at the University of California except those graded Passed/Not Passed or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.
  • P and NP are not included in the GPA; P gives unit credit and is awarded only for work equivalent to C or better, NP for C- or below.
  • W grades are disregarded in the GPA and are not counted as courses attempted.
  • IP is not included in the GPA; the final grade replaces the provisional IP grades in the last term of the sequence.
  • An Incomplete (I) not completed by the end of the following term changes automatically to F, NP or U.
  • Repeats: only courses graded C-, D+, D, D-, F or NP may be repeated. For the first 16 units repeated, only the most recent grade counts in the GPA (unless the new grade is NP); beyond 16 units, both grades count. An NP never replaces an earlier letter grade. Repeating more than once needs dean approval; credit is given once.
