How your result is calculated
- GPA = total grade points earned ÷ total units of letter-graded courses completed (grade points per unit × units).
- A+ earns the same 4.0 grade points as A; there are no D+ or D- grades.
- Courses graded I, IP, P, NP, S, U or W are left out of the GPA.
- The GPA covers courses taken at any University of California campus; UC San Diego Extension courses are not included.
- Pass (P) is awarded only for work that would otherwise earn C- or better; no more than 25% of an undergraduate's UC San Diego units may be taken Pass/Not Pass (independent study 199 courses excepted).
- An Incomplete (I) not made up lapses to a permanent F, NP or U; at graduation an overall 2.0 on all work attempted at UC is required.
- A course graded A+ through C-, I, P or S may not be repeated (Entry Level Writing courses excepted); a course graded D or F may be repeated only for a letter grade.
- For the first 16 units an undergraduate repeats after a D, F or NP, the earlier attempt is not used in the GPA; all grades stay on the transcript. Repeats after academic dishonesty count both attempts.
- A student may receive only one W per course.
