How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA (the cumulative grade point index) = total quality points ÷ total quality hours; quality points for a course = the grade's quality-point value × the course credits (an A in a 3-credit course earns 12 quality points).
  • Quality points are printed to three decimals: A- 3.667, B+ 3.333, B- 2.667, C+ 2.333, C- 1.667, D+ 1.333, D- 0.667. There is no A+.
  • F and X (failure for academic dishonesty) carry 0 quality points and count in the GPA.
  • Pass/fail: P is not counted in the GPA, but an F earned under the pass/fail option is. A P is given for a grade of A, B, C or D (plus or minus). One letter-graded course per semester may be taken pass/fail, up to 24 pass/fail credits in the degree (pass/fail-only courses excluded).
  • W, L, LW and NR carry no quality points. The temporary grades I, S, U and N are replaced by final grades; an I defaults to F two weeks into the next regular semester unless the instructor sets an alternative or an extension.
  • Repeats: the first and later grades of a repeated course all count in the GPA (credits count once toward graduation), unless the Grade Forgiveness Policy applies.
  • Grade Forgiveness (from Fall 2019): a UD course graded C- or lower during the terms up to and including the one in which you reach 28 credits attempted at UD may be retaken later, and only the higher grade is included in the GPA. Once per course, at most eight credits in total, only for the same course at UD; not for grades from an academic dishonesty finding, and a transferred course cannot replace a UD grade. All attempts stay on the transcript.
  • Credits and quality points transferred from other institutions are not included in the University of Delaware cumulative GPA.
  • A grade of Z (an unofficial-withdrawal grade used until August 2024) counts as F in the GPA.
