Rules the calculator follows
  • Instructors grade either A, B, C, D, F or with plus/minus grades (A+ to F), stated in the syllabus; A+ earns 4.33 grade points.
  • GPA = total grade points ÷ total semester hours taken, excluding courses graded AUS, AUU, IP, N, P, S or U and marks of I, O, R or W.
  • F counts in the GPA, including F in Satisfactory/Fail courses; S and U do not.
  • CLAS students may have four GPAs: the University of Iowa cumulative GPA (UI courses only), the major GPA, the transfer GPA (transferred courses only) and the cumulative GPA (all courses, UI and elsewhere).
  • An Incomplete (I) not completed by the deadline (the close of the following semester) automatically becomes F (or U).
  • Pass/Nonpass (P/N): elective courses only; P means C- or higher and N means D+ or lower; P/N hours are not used in the GPA; at most 15 s.h. of UI P credit and 30 s.h. of P and S credit from all sources count toward the degree.
  • Second-grade-only option (SGO): CLAS students may repeat up to three different UI courses, once each, regardless of the first grade; once requested, only the second grade counts in the GPA and hours earned, and both grades stay on the record. Until it is requested, both grades count. Both attempts must be UI courses taken A–F or S/F; graduate and professional programs may still count the first grade.
