How your result is calculated
- Quality points for a course = credit hours × grade point (for example 3 credit hours with a B = 3 × 3.0 = 9.0). GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours attempted.
- There are no minus grades and no A-: the scale is A+ 4.5, A 4.0, B+ 3.5, B 3.0, C+ 2.5, C 2.0, D 1.0, F 0.
- Grading scales used to turn course marks into letter grades vary between courses and programs; the university sets no single percentage table.
- The university reports a Term GPA (one term), a Sessional GPA (Fall and Winter terms of one year), a Cumulative GPA (all courses at the same level, including transferred ones) and a Degree GPA (courses accepted for credit toward the degree).
- All standard letter grades A+ to F count in the GPA. Pass/fail grades, Voluntary Withdrawals (VW) and Authorized Withdrawals (AW) are not included.
- Repeated courses: every attempt counts in the Term and Cumulative GPAs. Only the attempt with the highest grade counts toward the degree; whether earlier attempts are also in the Degree GPA depends on the faculty.
- Courses taken elsewhere on a Letter of Permission count in the Cumulative and Degree GPAs but not in the Term GPA.
- D is the lowest passing grade but faculties may require more; courses graded D may be repeated to improve a GPA.
- An incomplete (I) grade is calculated with zero for the unfinished work; if no final grade is reported within one month of the extension deadline, the I is dropped and the grade stands.
- A student who misses a final examination without an acceptable reason receives NP (No Paper) with a letter grade based on term work, counting zero for the examination.

Under Letter grade system (4.5 scale), A+ carries 4.5 grade points on a 4.5-point scale.
How is UManitoba Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) calculated?
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by credit hours.
Is OpenCGPA an official UManitoba calculator?
No. OpenCGPA is independent and not affiliated with University of Manitoba. It applies the rules published in UManitoba's own documents, linked on this page. Your official result is the one on your grade card.
