How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester average
Semester average = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative average
Cumulative average = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = quality points ÷ credits attempted in courses graded A+ through F or XF; quality points = grade value × credits. P, S, I, NGR and W are left out. A+ and A both carry 4.0.
  • XF (failure due to academic dishonesty) is treated as F in the cumulative average.
  • Repeats: one repeat per course (more only with the dean's exception) and no more than 18 repeated credits. All attempts graded A+ through F count in the GPA, except that only the higher grade counts when the repeated course was taken in the student's first semester at UMD or within the first 24 credits attempted (including transfer credits).
  • Repeat by transfer: if a course taken within the first 24 credits attempted is repeated elsewhere and the transfer grade is higher, the original grade is excluded from the GPA; after that point the original grade stays in.
  • Pass-fail: one course per semester, at most 12 credits, electives only, for students with 30 credits and a GPA of at least 2.0. A+ to C- become P (not in the GPA); D+, D, D- and F stay as given and count in the semester and overall averages.
  • An I is not used in computing quality points or GPAs; if the contract work is not completed on time (usually the next semester, at most one year) the instructor converts it to the contract grade.
  • Academic clemency can remove up to 16 credits from the cumulative GPA.
