How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Term GPA = term honor points ÷ term GPA semester hours; cumulative GPA = cumulative honor points ÷ cumulative GPA semester hours (e.g. 42.0 ÷ 12.0 = 3.5).
  • A+ and A both carry 4.0. Some U-M units use other scales on the transcript (4.3, 4.4 or 9.0); this scale is the 4.0 scale.
  • Grades A+ through D- earn credit and honor points; E earns no credit and counts as 0.0 in the GPA. ED and ILE count like E.
  • Pass/fail (LSA): the registrar records P for an instructor grade of C- through A+ and F for D+ or below; neither P nor F counts in the GPA.
  • CR/NC, S/U and VI (audit) earn no honor points.
  • In LSA, NR and NG grades not resolved by the 4th week of the next term become ED (counts as E); an Incomplete not completed by the deadline lapses to a failing grade.
