How your result is calculated
- Quality points = grade points × the course's semester credit hours. Term GPA = quality points earned in the term ÷ semester credit hours attempted for letter grades in the term (catalog example: 47.80 ÷ 18.0 = 2.656).
- There is no A+ and no D-: pluses and minuses are given on B and C, a minus on A and a plus on D.
- Repeats: a course not designated as repeatable earns credit only once (the attempt with the highest passing grade, or the later attempt if the grades are the same), but the grades of all attempts are computed in the cumulative GPA.
- Pass/Low Pass/Fail: PS (A through C) and LP (C-, D+ or D) do not count in the GPA; an F under the option counts like any other F. One student-elected PS/LP/F course per semester and at most 23 PS/LP/F hours in the undergraduate career (16 student-elected, 13 from PS/LP/F-only courses); not for General Education or First-Year Foundations courses, major/minor gateway or prerequisite courses, Summer School or honors courses.
- IN and AB are temporary grades and do not affect the GPA. If not cleared by the last day of finals of the next regular (fall or spring) semester they become F*, which counts in the GPA as a failing grade.
- FA (failed and absent from the final exam when the course could not be passed anyway) is a permanent failing grade.
- Grades or notations of LP, PS, SP, BE (credit by examination), W and PL (placement) are ignored in the quality point average.
- Grades and hours from other institutions are not included in the UNC-Chapel Hill GPA, except courses taken through interinstitutional registration.
