How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
SGPA
SGPA = Σ (Credit points × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit points
CGPA
CGPA = Σ (Credit points × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credit points
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = sum of (subject grade point × credit points) ÷ total credit points enrolled; all GPA values lie between 0.00 and 7.00.
  • Grades for all enrolled subjects in the course count, including fail results (Fail (X), Fail (Z) and Withdrawn Fail count as 0); ungraded Pass/Fail subjects are left out.
  • The GPA is calculated on finalised subjects only: with unresolved or withheld grades no GPA is shown.
  • 'Automatic Credit' on your transcript from previous UTS study (recognition of prior learning) is included in the GPA.
  • Each UTS course has its own GPA.
  • From 14 January 2020 grade points were raised to the 7-point scale and every GPA calculated since Autumn 2008 was recalculated on it.
  • Calculated the same way as the 7-point GPA: sum of (grade point × credit points) ÷ total credit points enrolled.
  • On this scale a Fail, including a Withdrawn Fail, carries 0.5 grade points.
  • Since 14 January 2020 UTS records GPAs on the 7-point scale; this scale is a guide only.
  • WAM = Σ(MU) ÷ ΣU, where M is the mark received for a subject and U its credit points: multiply each mark by the subject's credit points, add the results and divide by the total credit points.
  • The transcript WAM is cumulative over all completed subjects in the course; if you study more than one UTS course you get a separate WAM for each.
  • Included: every subject graded with a mark (Pass, Credit, Distinction, High Distinction, Fail and Fail (X)), Withdrawn/Fail results, and subjects credited into the course from previous study at UTS.
  • Not included: Pass/Fail subjects without marks, subjects graded without marks, and subjects exempted or given advanced standing for study at other institutions.
  • The WAM used to decide a level of award (e.g. 'with Distinction' or Honours) may differ from the transcript WAM, for example when a faculty counts only the subjects of one award in a combined course.
