How your result is calculated
- GPA = total grade points earned ÷ number of credits applied toward the GPA.
- A+ earns the same 4.000 grade points as A for undergraduates (4.300 only in the School of Law).
- F counts in the GPA with 0 points and earns no credit; D- (0.700) and above earn credit.
- CR, NC, W, S, U, AU, IN, IV, NG, NR and YR are not included in the GPA.
- An undergraduate Incomplete (IN) becomes an F 35 calendar days after the last day of the final exam period.
- Repeats: an undergraduate who earned D+, D, D- or F may take the course a second time and only the higher of the two grades counts in the GPA — for the first 9 credits of repeated courses only, when both attempts are at UVA for a letter grade and the repeat is no earlier than Fall 2024 (Fall 2025 for the College of Arts & Sciences). Both grades stay on the transcript.
- Transfer credit: only credits transfer (C or better); transfer grades do not affect the UVA cumulative GPA.
- Each school sets its own grading rules for repeating courses beyond this, CR/NC limits and other details.

Questions
How is UVA Semester GPA calculated?
Semester GPA is the average of your grade points weighted by credits: multiply each course's credits by the grade point for your grade, add these up, and divide by the total credits. Under Undergraduate grading system, A+ carries 4 grade points on a 4-point scale.
How is UVA Cumulative GPA calculated?
Cumulative GPA is the average of the grade points of all courses taken so far, weighted by credits.
Is OpenCGPA an official UVA calculator?
No. OpenCGPA is independent and not affiliated with University of Virginia. It applies the rules published in UVA's own documents, linked on this page. Your official result is the one on your grade card.
