How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Semester GPA
Semester GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative grade point average (GPA)
Cumulative grade point average (GPA) = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Grade-point averages are calculated from the quality points per credit shown in the table (A+ and A both earn 4.00).
  • AF (administrative failure for a missing grade) and XF (failure for academic dishonesty) count as F in the GPA.
  • AU, INC, P/NP, S/U, SP/UP, W, ANP, AUP and R appear on the transcript but are not used in the GPA.
  • Pass/No Pass: degree students not on academic trial may take up to 6 courses pass/no pass from their sophomore year, but not for major, minor, College/School or Catamount Core requirements; D or higher is recorded as Pass and F as No Pass, with no GPA impact.
  • Incomplete (INC) work must be finished by the beginning of the corresponding semester of the next academic year at the latest.
  • Repeats (courses repeated after August 30, 2020): a standard course may be repeated once without approval and earns credit once; the first grade becomes R and only the repeat grade counts in the GPA, even if it is lower. An original I, W or XF does not convert to R. For courses repeated before Fall 2020, both attempts count in the GPA.
  • Courses UVM designates as repeatable earn credit and a GPA grade for every attempt, up to their repeat limit.
  • Only UVM courses count in the GPA; transfer work brings credit only.
  • Academic Reprieve: a student returning after at least 3 years away may, once, restart the GPA at 0; earlier grades are excluded and passed credits carried forward.
