How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Quarterly GPA
Quarterly GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
Cumulative GPA
Cumulative GPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Rules the calculator follows
  • Instructors report numeric grades from 4.0 to 0.7 in steps of 0.1, or 0.0; grades of 0.6 to 0.1 are not assigned and are converted to 0.0.
  • The letter grades are only equivalents of numeric ranges (A = 4.0-3.9, A- = 3.8-3.5, B+ = 3.4-3.2 … D- = 0.8-0.7, E = 0.0); the GPA uses the numeric grade.
  • Grade points = credits × numeric grade; GPA = total grade points ÷ total graded credits attempted.
  • A 0.0 counts in the GPA but earns no credit; students who do not officially drop a course receive 0.0.
  • S, NS, CR, NC, I, N, W, HW and RD are not computed in the GPA.
  • Satisfactory/not-satisfactory option: an undergraduate's numeric grade of 2.0 or above becomes S and below 2.0 becomes NS; S counts as credit earned, NS does not; no more than 25 S/NS credits may apply toward an undergraduate degree.
  • An Incomplete not made up by the grading deadline of the next quarter (Fall for a Spring Incomplete) converts to 0.0 (NC in a credit/no-credit course) and the GPA is recomputed.
  • An undergraduate may repeat a course once with the department's approval; both the original and the second grade are computed in the GPA, but credit is allowed only once.
  • Grades in a third or later taking of a course are not included in the GPA.
  • The cumulative GPA is based solely on courses taken in residence at the UW (including some UW Extension courses); grades for non-residence Extension work and credit by examination do not affect it.
  • The catalog's worked examples show the GPA to two decimals (40.1 ÷ 12 = 3.34; 19.6 ÷ 13 = 1.51).
